Party with the Stars Better than a Billionaire This Fall
Good morning, Live Better than a Billionaire-a-Holics!
Are you feeling motivated this morning? I certainly hope so. I know that I am!
Have you ever enjoyed a magical evening studying the stars in a remote location? Or lay on a beach after dark waiting for the moon to rise?
If so, you're a good candidate for a star party!
As civilization has advanced, the nights have become more and more like the days in terms of illumination. The near-by neon glow often obscures subtle features of the night sky.
Astronomers have a solution: They move out to remote areas where the night sky is darker. They favor parts of nights when the moon is down. Fall is a favorite season, and many star parties will begin in the next few days.
While it can be fun to simply take a telescope and enjoy the nightly visions with your friends and family, you might enjoy yourself more if you attend a star party. At such events, you will be joined by amateur astronomers who both know more and less than you do. So you can expand your enjoyment by receiving and giving encouragement.
Some star parties also have a formal educational component with talks and demonstrations. Others feature contests to make telescopes.
For background on the whole phenomenon, I recommend that you first visit S. Kirk Walsh's New York Times piece on Star Parties that appeared on September 23. Here's the link: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/23/travel/escapes/23ahead.html
The best sources of information about star parties in your area probably will come from the local chapters of the Astronomical League. Go to http://www.astroleague.org/al/general/society.html to find out that contact information. If you like a local star party, consider joining the Astronomical League.
For many star parties, you don't even need a telescope. Bring your binoculars instead, and you will probably find people there who will allow you to watch through their telescopes. Ask an organizer if telescopes will be shared before attending.
This is a particularly good activity for families with younger children, and many star parties have activities aimed just for the youngsters. Parents are usually encouraged to attend the young peoples' activities as well.
There's only one drawback. You probably won't meet any billionaires at star party. They are mostly tied up back in light-polluted civilization.
