Become a Frequent Guest on Radio and Television Programs
Good morning, Live Better than a Billionaire-a-Holics!
Are you feeling motivated this morning? I certainly hope so. I know that I am!
Before getting into the substance of this post, let me remind you that my last class in the Boston area starts tonight:
In Brookline, Massachusetts (617-730-2700)
Course V268: Franchising Opportunities to Start a New Business on September 21 and 28 (this is a new course to help you find out if owning a franchise if right for you and which franchise to pursue)
Introduction
Many billionaires are fending off investigations into alleged wrong-doing. That's the kind of publicity no one needs.
They can also make a splash by giving away a billion as Ted Turner did in recent years and Bill and Melinda Gates do on a routine basis. That's expensive.
What if you simply want to be a frequent guest on radio and television programs and talk about positive subjects?
Observations
If you simply watched television all day, you would think that only people who had had sex with people and animals that they shouldn't have sex with were ever going to be on the air.
There's also serious television with long discussions about important matters, television that looks into the fun sides of life through entertainment and shows that feature people who have ideas.
Radio seems like one long rant today, but you've also probably run into an occasional program that featured a knowledgeable person who improved your life or told you about a cause you want to support.
How can you be booked for those interviews that you like so much?
Recommendations
What can you do?
1. The least expensive alternative is to learn how to book yourself on radio and television programs from free resources.
You are probably wondering where to start. There are many excellent books on the subject. I recommend Susan Harrow's book: Sell Yourself without Selling Your Soul (Harper, 2002). This book is designed especially for women, but I found it just as helpful as a man.
There are also very good e-letters that you can subscribe to for free. Susan Harrow has one you can sign up for at http://www.prsecrets.com/joinlist.html/. Planned Television Arts, a public relations firm, has excellent resources at http://www.plannedtvarts.com/pta/index.html/. Be sure to sign up for Rick Frishman's weekly newsletter there.
2. The next most inexpensive method is to take short classes in how to book yourself.
Rick Frishman offers one almost every month at the Learning Annex in New York City. His next class is October 18th on Guerilla Publicity. Go to www.learningannex.com and type in his name in the search box in the upper right hand corner to find the course.
3. The least heavy lifting way while not spending a lot is to advertise in Radio-TV Interview Report.
This resource is provided for free to radio and television producers, and they find many of their guests this way. The people at Radio-TV Interview Report make this easy for you. They write the ad copy to attract attention based on their many years of experience. You can expect to hear from about five producers from a single half-page ad. Steve Harrison, who publishes this report, is about to turn 40. He's offering a very low price for three half-page ads for the next few days. Check out http://www.rtir.com/ to inquire about the offer and to find out about what he offers.
4. If you want to become a radio-television heavyweight, check out Steve Harrison's national publicity summits.
At these remarkable events, Steve first teaches you how to pitch yourself and then turns you loose to try out your skills with over 60 top journalists and producers who attend the session. Most people make lasting connections that launch continuing publicity.
The cost is significant. It will set you back about $5 a day for three years. If you are in contact with Steve about Radio-TV Interview Report, you will receive offers for this when they next become available.
