Enjoy Breakfast Better than a Billionaire

Good morning, Live Better than a Billionaire-a-Holics!

Are you feeling motivated this morning? I certainly hope so. I know that I am!

Today's post is coming from an unlikely source: Someone who rarely eats before noon. Despite that, I love breakfast food. I just enjoy breakfast at times when others are having snacks, lunch and dinner.

Most people are pretty conservative about food. They eat the same things day in and day out at the same times. And they eat their food in the same places.

From many years of considering breakfast, I've come to realize that breakfast food can be improved by eating it other than in the morning.

Here's why:

Most of us want milder, blander food in the mornings. But later in the day, we are more adventuresome. Eat breakfast foods at other times, and your spirit will egg you on to spice up your life while eating.

Also, many of us aren't so wide awake in the morning. Eating is better enjoyed while being totally aware and in the mood to make choices. Otherwise, it's like stoking a coal fired engine with more chunks of anthracite. That will keep you going, but you won't enjoy it as much.

I first discovered that eating breakfast foods could be special when I began to regularly commute to San Francisco from Boston to do consulting work. Naturally, I was still on Boston time so I would awake around 3:30 a.m. do some work, make some calls and have pretty much done a good chunk of a day's work by 9 a.m. I would schedule my consulting day to run from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. But before heading off for consulting, I would be able to visit one of the great breakfast restaurants in San Francisco for a leisurely meal in quiet surroundings. Trust me. During the week few people are dining out for breakfast at 10 a.m.

Later, I learned another secret. Almost any restaurant will create a special breakfast for you at any time of the day or night. So you don't have to be tied to those "all day breakfast" places to obtain your favorite breakfast foods.

Just in the last 10 years, I learned something else. I love oatmeal for lunch! But I don't make it like most people make oatmeal. I put sesame seeds, chocolate and cinnamon in my oatmeal . . . when I'm not dropping blueberries or raspberries into it. On a cold day, I first feel warm when I have that piping hot oatmeal suffusing my torso with its goodness.

Experimenting from there, I've come to transform typical breakfast fare into something totally different . . . which greatly improves the results. I was reminded of how much I do this the other night when a friend told me about eating peanut butter and jelly flavored French toast at a brunch . . . and how much she loved it.

But to me, the main pleasure of breakfast food is picking a perfect location to enjoy these delights. I favor eating outdoors with a gorgeous view in front of me. Beverly Hills has several places where you can do that. La Quinta in the Mojave desert also has some great spots. Pebble Beach near Carmel in California can also provide some memorable breakfast food dining opportunities. In Florida, South Beach offers some great locations (I'm partial to the News Cafe there). During the good weather, New York can be terrific for this. During the bad weather, take in Tavern on the Green. In August, there's a perfect spot overlooking Salzburg in Austria that can keep you occupied for a five hour meal.

I'm not a chef, but I do like to try my hand at innovative food concoctions. I favor unusual, fresh ingredients. Drop a little ripe mango in your lingonberry syrup and the results are totally different. Squeeze some lime on your waffles, and they develop a delicious piquancy. Dust Dutch chocolate onto your eggs, and a smile will soon be on your face. If you like spices, fresh dill can turn plain yogurt into a savory outdoor experience.

Don't forget the flowers. Breakfast foods require spectacular flower arrangements that suffuse you with rich aromas. Sometimes, you can time your al fresco dining to match the flowering of fragrant plants nearby.

Did I forget to mention music? The best way to dine is with strolling musicians. I favor violinists. The food seems to taste better with Vivaldi's The Four Seasons shimmering around me.

Water. Don't forget the water! It needs to be tasty still mineral water kept a delightfully refreshing 53 degrees. That will help cleanse your palate so you can enjoy and taste more of your breakfast food delights.

Can a billionaire do any better? I doubt it.

A billionaire can certainly do more in seclusion than you can. But the billionaire cannot do as much out of seclusion as you. So the billionaire is denied many of the most interesting places to eat breakfast foods. Billionaires also aren't known for their sunny smiles (with a few exceptions like Sir Richard Branson) so you have to wonder if they have a lot of indigestion. If so, they won't be enjoying too many fresh Jalapeno peppers with their bacon.
