Visit Your Relatives (Including Those You Don't Like) and Have a Ball Better than a Billioniare!
Good morning, Live Better than a Billionaire-a-Holics!
Are you feeling motivated this morning? I certainly hope so. I know that I am!
What comes to mind when you think of visiting your relatives?
For some, it's great events of their youth.
For others, it's painful memories of conflict, turmoil and strife.
For billionaires, such occasions are likely to involve requests for loans, investment funds and conflict over financial planning.
If that doesn't make a billionaire feel like a piece of meat, I don't know what will.
Rarely does someone think . . . this is going to be the greatest day of my life!
How can you do better?
Observations
Most people approach family visits as an exercise in avoiding what makes them feel bad.
By definition, that means focusing on what you don't want.
Try this experiment. Try not to think about ugly, yellow hippos with blue polka dots and buck teeth that have bad breath. Did you succeed? Probably not.
A better approach is to focus on what you do want.
Imagine a day filled with laughter, love, kindness and caring. Do you see it? How can you help make it happen?
Recommendations
1. Think about how much you love your relatives.
Imagine saying "I love you" to each of them as you plan the day. Does that make you feel better?
2. Imagine making each of them laugh with joy.
As you imagine those wonderful laughs, move back in time in your mind and think about what you just said that triggered the delightful laugh.
3. Feel like you are with each of them and receiving the nicest hug you've ever had from another person.
Just enjoy that warmth and protection. Breathe as you exult in those embrace.
4. Think about what you all love to do.
Every family is different. But there's something that really resonates with all of you. It might be Thanksgiving at Grandma's house. Or it might be a carefree day at the beach. Or a Fourth of July picnic.
5. Arrive feeling like you've already enjoyed all of these wonderful experiences.
Practice during the trip. It's more fun than watching traffic.
6. Express all these feelings when you arrive.
Take each person and tell them you love them, give them a hug, say something that makes them laugh with joy, and describe the wonderful times you've had together in the past.
7. Ask each person how you can make this the best day of their life.
That's a great way to get things moving. Their faces will shine as they dredge up their best memories. Ask them what was the best day before this one.
8. End the day by thanking each person for being so wonderful . . . just as they are.
Even if you had a lousy time, you'll see their faces light up with joy . . . and you'll have a good time too.
