Last Minute Weekend Plans Better than a Billionaire
Good morning, Live Better than a Billionaire-a-Holics!
Are you feeling motivated this morning? I certainly hope so. I know that I am!
I once knew the treasurer of a major international airline who lived in New York. He and his wife had no children. Each Friday morning over breakfast, they would consider what to do for the weekend. Should they go shopping in Paris? Or party in Rio? Or how about visiting a ranch in Argentina?
At 5:30 p.m. the treasurer's wife would meet him with two sets of bags at the international terminal of the company at JFK airport, and they would fly stand-by to the destination of their choice for a few dollars. As an airline executive, he only had to pay the federal tax on the flight.
I know they did this because I often bumped into them at the airport on Friday nights as I prepared to head overseas for a week-long trip.
On Sunday, they would fly back. The treasurer would go into work on Monday . . . just as though nothing special had happened. And of course, to them, nothing special had happened.
Unless you happen to be in that situation, life isn't quite so flexible. But with cheap travel deals, the ability to buy last minute bargain tickets to entertainment choices, and a little spare time, your greatest adventure may be awaiting you beginning tomorrow night.
Do you have a passport? Look into bargain fares. You may even be able to take a quick cruise even . . . especially if you can stretch the weekend by a day or two through taking some personal time off.
Don't want to travel? Here's a tip. I have to be away this weekend, and have an extra ticket to the Patriots-Jets game. I thought I would easily sell the ticket for face value. No such luck. That tells me that you can probably go to that game in Gillette Stadium for a big discount from the usual cost. Check out your local NFL and NBA teams. If they are losing, tickets may be going for peanuts.
Look at the weather. Most people curtail outdoor activities in December as the conditions go downhill and get colder. But a last-minute warm front may permit you to even go to the beach, where you will have the place to yourself.
Scout around among the entertainment listings in your local suburban newspaper. Chances are there are lots of concerts, programs and performances that are going to be excellent at a very low cost.
Or just want to escape? Check out the last minute deals for hotels on www.priceline.com/. When a hotel has no weekend business, they often will sell rooms for $40 a night on Priceline.
Want to spend even less money? Ask friends if you can use their summer homes for the weekend. It's after leaf peeping season, so these homes are probably not in use.
Or just wake up each morning, stretch and play it by ear. Just head out and stop at the first thing that looks interesting that you've never done before.
Could a billionaire do better? I doubt it.
