Pick an Exciting New Area to Learn in 2006!

Good morning, Live Better than a Billionaire-a-Holics!

Are you feeling motivated this morning? I certainly hope so. I know that I am!

Two types of memories inspired me to write this post. I'll share those memories to help you create the most excitement for yourself!

The first and most vivid memory was of being a child and imagining how great it would be to learn to drive and have a car . . . and be able to go anywhere I wanted! That sense of freedom thrills me today . . . even though I seldom launch off on such a trip. An only slightly less vivid memory was the first time my family left me home alone . . . and I could choose to watch any television channel I wanted . . . whenever I wanted. And this was before cable TV. It seemed like limitless freedom.

The second memory is of sitting in Peter Drucker's living room discussing what my new learning project would be for the upcoming year. Peter had always made it a practice to learn a new subject about which he knew either nothing or very little each year. He would ask us to do the same. Being very driven by curiosity, I usually sought out more than one subject. One year I was fascinated to hear Peter share how learning about Japanese art had been one of the most important new subjects. From that study, his wife Doris and he began a collection . . . and Peter developed an appreciation for Japanese culture that lead to much learning about management. Who would have thought?

From those memories, I want to suggest some guidance:

1. Do pick a subject to study for at least a year.

2. Pick one that is so exciting for you that you feel lifted off your feet with imagined joy just from thinking about the subject!

3. Have no purpose in mind for your learning. That will keep you focused on the joy. Otherwise, the learning can turn into "work" which won't keep you so motivated.

4. Celebrate your gains as you launch your way through the subject . . . and laugh at yourself through any difficulties. Imagine that you are the star in a hit comedy show and you are supposed to do a certain amount of bumbling around to entertain your audience . . . yourself!

5. Pick out that subject and take a step today towards beginning your learning. Sign up for piano lessons. Order a book on making French pastries. Check out tapes for learning to speak Chinese from the library. Get out a map and plan that walking tour of French chateaux you've always wanted to do.

Here's a big hint. Think back to when you were a young child and the whole world was limitlessly available to you. What did you want to do then that you've never gotten around to? Now's the time!

Could a billionaire do better? I doubt it.

Billionaires can get caught up into the idea that you always have to do things on a grand scale. Learning how to build doll houses might be an exciting thought . . . but a billionaire might feel that was beneath her or him.
