Enjoy Movies More with Discount Tickets and Passes

Good morning, Live Better than a Billionaire-a-Holics!

Are you feeling motivated this morning? I certainly hope so. I know that I am!

Recently, my wife and I went out to the movies on short notice and were shocked to be asked to pay $9.50 each for the pleasure. It wasn't worth it. Tom must have had a similar experience because he made a comment that he would like to know to how to cut into the high price of movie tickets.

Well, Tom, there's good news for you. There are so many ways to save money on movie tickets that you should be able to continue affording this form of entertainment.

Let me start by sharing my family's experience over the years. We have had two different youngsters who worked at movie chains as ushers. Each was able to attend movies for free, bring along a guest and enjoy refreshments inexpensively (by bringing along their own bags for popcorn and cups for soft drinks). I wasn't able to verify if this is still the case because I didn't make it out to a movie over the weekend as I had planned. But the next time you are going to a movie, ask the people working there what the employee fringe benefits are related to watching movies and refreshments.

If this perk is still in place, you can check around to see if you have a pal who works in a theater who you can attend with, make friends with someone who does, or you can consider taking a part-time job to get the benefit for yourself.

Movie chains have always sold their tickets at wholesale prices. Many organizations buy tickets at wholesale and resell them at the same price. I looked up the program that AMC Theatres offers. For all movies after the "limited engagement" period is over (usually two weeks), the "silver" price is $5.50 per ticket (with a surcharge in Manhattan). The minimum purchase is 50 tickets. See https://nationalsales.amctheatres.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=15&CFID=1156504&CFTOKEN=84721609
Keep in mind that with some such purchases, you can get an unlimited movie pass for yourself! Perhaps there is an organization you know that would like to offer such wholesale tickets and would be willing to let you have the free pass in exchange for doing the work to order and publicize the tickets.

When I went to google.com and searched under "discount movie passes". Many schools offered individual tickets at the wholesale ticket prices. You should go there and scroll down until you find an organization that's near you. Some AAA clubs may also offer discount movie tickets. There may be a minimum purchase involved if they do. We have often bought our tickets at AAA in the past.

In addition, some people receive free passes as gifts and auction them off on e-bay. You have to be sure that you don't overpay. When I checked auctions this morning, the prices were high compared to the wholesale price.

Most theaters also offer "student" rates. All you need is some sort of a "student" ID. Ask your local theaters which IDs are accepted. You may be able to take a very inexpensive night school class that you would enjoy in film and be able to get discounts at the ticket window. I don't know anyone who goes to a film school, but I suspect that they also offer discount tickets in addition to inexpensive tickets to classic movie series.

Could a billionaire do better? I am sure they could.

Movie producers have always made new films available for free for private showings. That's one reason why many wealthy people have full size home theaters (not the kind that are described as "home theaters" on television). If you know someone like that, just earn your way onto the "A" list for movie watching.
